Tips from the married lady…

August 31st, 2011

I joke all the time now that since my wedding is over, I am just an “old married lady.” So let’s embrace that for a moment and let me tell you what I have learned in my marriage thus far and the years leading up to it.

1. “I want you to want to do the dishes.”

Let’s be serious ladies… No one ever WANTS to clean. I mean, there are a few people out there who get this weird enjoyment out of cleaning. I feel a great sense of accomplishment when my house is done and spotless, but never once enjoy it. The vast majority of people do not want to clean. Ever. And men fall into this category too. So the famous line from the movie The Break-up “I want you to want to do the dishes” is just never really going to happen, unless you lucked out and married a neat-freak. And in that case, I hope you too are a neat-freak because someone is bound to get on someone’s nerves. My husband doesn’t enjoy cleaning, but he does it. Does he do it how I do it? No. Not even close. But he will make an honest attempt and that is all I really care about. I can never get mad at him for cleaning and it not being to my standards. If my standards are that high, then I should just do it myself.

2. “Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis…”

Men NEVER grow out of video games. I know it is something you hope will happen, but you are only setting yourself up for disappointment if you truly think it will happen. If you think about it, they have all grown up with video games. As they have matured, so have the video games. My husband has been playing in an online NCAA Football league for the last year and a half (at least, I haven’t actually kept track of how long). He enjoys it. He always asks if I want him to use the PS3 in the other room before hopping on to play a game. He is courteous about it. He doesn’t put the games ahead of something else that is truly more important. I guess I just think about it like this… he could be dealing or smoking crack. Instead, he plays video games. Could be worse, right?

3. He will always be his mother’s son.

There are two kinds of mama’s boys. The first is one that respects and loves his mother. The other is one that believes that his mom is the only woman good enough for him. In the case of the former, there is a good chance he will treat you right and expect that your children treat you how he treats his mother. There really is no help for the latter. But then again, you probably wouldn’t be engaged to a guy like this. I can only imagine how annoying it would be to be constantly compared to your beau’s mother. Lucky for me, I have the first mama’s boy. He loves his mom. He respects her for her devotion in years past to his football games or for hosting his friends in basketball tournaments at their house with chipped ham sandwiches. I have no doubt that when we have children, he will teach them to respect me like he does his mom. So you can’t always knock the mama’s boys. Sometimes they make the best husbands.

4. He is always going to be an after-school snacker.

Try as I might, Joey just has a less experimental attitude toward food than I. Our freezer is full of frozen pizzas, chicken patties, hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken nuggets. He actually has “Chicken Nugget Mondays.” No joke. He likes what he likes. Don’t get me wrong, I try to force new things on him all the time. Sometimes he likes it, others not so much. Most guys love these after school foods because it is easy and simple. While I might be grilling marinated salmon with rice pilaf and green beans almondine, he’d be completely happy with a burger or a frozen pizza. I can’t really complain though. He could be completely helpless and expect me to make him dinner every night. He is self-sufficient. And that works for me.

So the moral of this blog is, you can’t change a leopard’s spots. You just can’t. If you want someone to change so badly, you probably shouldn’t be with them. You have to learn to embrace these things and remember these are the things that make him who he is. I giggle every time I ask Joey what he wants to eat for dinner on a Monday and he looks at me with a straight face and says, “It’s Chicken Nugget Monday.” Sometimes I do it just to laugh because I already know what he is going to say. I love him because he loves his mom. I don’t always get the video games, but I let him go if it makes him happy. And the cleaning, well I don’t like it either so we usually have to motivate each other on that one. These are all things that come as part of him. When I think of the bigger picture, none of these things change the way I feel about him. This is the small stuff. And you should never sweat the small stuff.

Tuesday Shoesday, Edition 9

August 30th, 2011

I came across these shoes by Vera Wang and just couldn’t let them pass without sharing.

And the best part… they can be found at David’s Bridal because they are part of Ms. Wang’s special line White by Vera Wang. Enjoy!

Friday Finds 8.26.11

August 26th, 2011

Today’s find is a shop that I have come across numerous times while perusing the many wedding blogs I follow. Twigs and Honey is owned by a phenomenally talented artist, Myra Callan. Though she is based in Oregon, her designs can be found across the country in a number of bridal shops or online at her website. Now the reason I am bringing this to your attention is that I cannot believe how gorgeous her pieces are! I mean, WOW! She has anything from veils to hairpieces to flowers to headbands. She has an organic touch that makes the pieces all so lovely and enticing. Let’s take a look at a few to appease your hungry eyes (and yes, I literally just broke out into song when I typed that “I’ve got hungry eyes…”).

She also has a collection of everyday items for those of you who are already married or who just can possibly wait until the big day to wear one. Check out her page here.

As I said the show must go on… with more pretty shoes.

For those of you who watch David Tutera’s My Fair Wedding, you will know that on one of the past season’s episodes he featured a store called Artyce Custom Footwear. Basically, with them you design your own shoes. You choose the heel height, style of shoe, and customize the embellishment however you want it. If you are a true lover of shoes like me, you can see the appeal of this shop. Here are just a few designs found on their Facebook page.

Oh and the most wonderful thing… if you do not live in LA or Houston, they are now accepting phone orders as well. So be sure to check out their website for more details!!

Exciting Changes

August 22nd, 2011

Well ladies and gents, I have exciting news. Some of you may know already, but some of you don’t. I have accepted a position with the Mansion at Maple Heights as the Wedding and Events General Manager. Those of you who know me personally know this is a dream job for me. And you may also know that my day job was not quite my cup of tea. I love the lovey-dovey, gooey-ness of weddings and now I get to do what I love everyday.

So you may wonder what effect that has on Nicki Ann Events… Well for those of you who hold contracts with me, it doesn’t mean a darn thing. I am still here and going to uphold those contracts. I will be there every step of the way and will help you to plan your event perfectly down to the very last dance of your big day. For those of you who have not booked Nicki Ann Events, you will have to hold on for a bit.

While I have put a lot of energy into building my own business in the last year, it has not grown enough to support me or my family. Don’t get me wrong. I knew it wouldn’t happen overnight. So I was waking up and dragging myself out of bed every morning to go to a job that was just that. A job. It paid the bills. I worked with such wonderful people and thank goodness for them because there is no way I could have lasted 5 years there without them. Three of my co-workers even ended up being my bridesmaids and best friends. I am so excited to wake up in the morning and actually want to go to work. I know that when the time comes and I have gotten and given all I can from the Mansion, I can move on to my own thing. And the best part is that the rest of the staff at the Mansion believes the same thing.

Now for the really exciting news! You will still be able to get your fill of Tuesday Shoesday, Friday Finds, and the rest of the witty humor I bring to this blog. So rest assured I am not going anywhere… except to a new web address. You’ll be able to follow the adventures of Nicki Ann more frequently too since it will actually be part of my job. The address to be announced. But for now, I’d like to leave you with a little something to make you jealous and hopefully make you reach for your dreams like I did mine.

My “office” :)

Friday Finds 8.19.11

August 20th, 2011

Ok, so it’s not Friday. But if you knew what my week has been like you would know that I wouldn’t have even been able to lift my fingers to type yesterday. So a day late, but not a dollar short, here is your Friday Find for 8.19.11.

I found this cute little dress when “window” shopping online. Arden B is one of my favorites and as soon as I saw this dress, I thought it would make the perfect reception dress.

I mean really, how adorable is this dress?! As much as I loved my gown, it makes me wish I had found it prior to my own wedding for a wardrobe change mid-reception. Super duper cute!!!! You can find it online here from Arden B.

Tuesday Shoesday, Edition 7

August 16th, 2011

How many of you ladies are about the same height as your future hubby? This was an issue I had to deal with because I had to find shoes under a certain heel height to ensure I was not taller than mine on our day. I normally don’t care and rock the 4 inchers. However, for the sake of photos, I wanted to be sure I wasn’t towering over him. For those of you who have the same issues, check out these hot little flats. There are a few different colors, but I chose to show you the blue because it’s my favorite color and they can double as your something blue.

Purchase them at Zappos! Heck for the price, you may just want to grab a pair to wear everyday! I do this for you ladies. I do it for you.

Friday Finds 8.12.11

August 12th, 2011

For those of you who obsess over the wedding world like I do, you probably have heard of Mindy Weiss. She is the one behind a ton of celebrity weddings & parties. Fergie and Josh Duhamel, Heidi Klum & Seal, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden are just a few of her clients. She knows her stuff. Today’s find is her eStore. Not only does she have amazing wedding items, but quite a few adorable items for a 1-year-old’s birthday (for those of you married and already getting the “so when are you having kids?” questions), jewelry, home accessories, etc. You really do need to check out her store. Not only are the pieces super cute, but reasonably priced! Here are just a few of the things I fell in love with:

What a wonderful shower gift!! Placing a sixpence in your shoes is a time honored tradition for many familes. Who doesn’t need a little extra luck when starting out on a journey like marriage?

How adorable are these books? Little kids love gifts and what a perfect way to make them feel special for your big day!

Tuesday Shoesday, Edition 6

August 9th, 2011

Ok, these heels totally intrigue my antique-loving side. I adore the rhinestone brooch detail and rose color. Swooning! And if the pink isn’t quite for you, they have a number of other colors. Once again, Badgley Mischka makes my heart flutter!

As I was perusing the extensive list of blogs I follow, I found this article by Preston Bailey in his new Bride Ideas blog. It got me thinking. So many people just use the simple, plain, tented escort cards. BORING! Why not spice it up a little and incorporate a little flair?? Here are some other ways to show your guests to their seats.
